Tech Notices
Posted on 11th July 2007Historically the Computing Society has run a "blog":http://uwcs.livejournal.com/ that contains information about planned downtime, updates to society servers etc. This is being revived and should be used to convey any future information about such issues. Thank you for listening.
Molotov/Codd Migration
Posted on 10th July 2007The migration of molotov to codd is now complete. All user accounts and services have been restored. Unfortunately the migration took a lot longer the anticipated, due to unforeseen circumstances. We sincerely apologies for the delay and any inconveniences caused.
As some of you may be aware, we are planning on expiring all passwords on codd. This is on order to filter out the weak passwords. If you wish to keep the same password as before, you can change it back by using the passwd command, but if your pa...
Server Migration
Posted on 6th July 2007The Computing Society main server, codd, has been brought online today. Migration is an on-going process, and services will continue to be brought back up this afternoon. If you have identified any problems that you wish to report please email techteam@uwcs.co.uk or ask in #tech on irc.uwcs.co.uk.
Server Migration (cotd.)
Posted on 6th July 2007Earlier today, Codd (the replacement for Molotov) was brought on-line. Our plan was to migrate all data and services across during the course of the afternoon. Unfortunately, while moving user accounts from Molotov, the /etc/passwd file got removed, thus preventing the use of sudo to fix the situation and also any subsequent attempts to log in to the machine. This cannot be resolved till we can gain physical access to Codd - on Monday.
Let us assure you that all your data are safe in the meanwhile and that...
BBQ location MOVED due to bad weather
Posted on 24th June 2007Unfortunately its been raining heavily this morning rendering the chances of running an effective BBQ in a field nill. It is also likely to continue raining, sometimes heavily, during the day. Consequently we are moving the BBQ to Bucko's house in coventry where we can very easily move to the warm indoors during rainy spells. People on campus will be able to get a lift from Tesco at 12.30. Otherwise there is a "map":http://www.bucko.me.uk/images/maptocrosbie.png, which can be used for direction, as maps h...
BFL
Posted on 22nd June 2007The BFL marches steadily closer, and there are a few things to announce before it all kicks off.
h4. Power issues
Due to power constraints we will only be allowing you to bring one out of the following: 2nd monitor, fan, laptop, file server, console. If you do choose to turn up with more than one of them, you will be asked to wait and the power draw of all your equipment for the LAN will be measured. If this is below 360W, you will be allowed to use all your equipment. Otherwise we shall discuss what you ...

BFL Signups
Posted on 2nd June 2007As I'm sure many of you are aware, as we approach the end of term 3 we also approach the busiest event in the Compsoc calendar: the BFL / Mega LAN, a 5 day LAN running from Monday 25th June to Friday 29th. For fellow freshers, be amply warned that the BFL fills up pretty sharpish, so get signup ...
