Wireless Hotspots

Posted on 21st October 2003

Richard Oakham (Zatneichatel) has put together an excellent page in the LUG wiki on how to use the IT Services hotspots around campus, including getting Linux to co-operate with them. Well worth a look: now you too can IRC from Airfare!

Social Events!

Posted on 19th October 2003

CompSoc have two important social events coming up:

The first LAN party of term is at the end of next week. Signups are full, but don't let that discourage you - someone may well drop out, so it's worth signing up on the reserve list.

Also, on November the 15th, we are going to see The Matrix: Revolutions, only a week after it opens! Signups are now open. Be sure to give your money to an exec member by November the 1st, otherwise we can't book your place.

More Downtime

Posted on 17th October 2003

Sorry for the yet more downtime. This is once gain due to ITS and the Onion being lame and changing settings/dieing respectively.
An angry mob will be formed shortly to deal with the problem on a permanent basis, just as soon as Draconas can aquire AK-47's for everybody.

Molotov downtime 26/09/03

Posted on 26th September 2003

Apologies for the Molotov downtime this morning. This was due to the University moving Molotov into a VLAN and not telling us. As a result of this, we had to change Molotov's default gateway within the University network. Things should be back to normal now.

POP Errors

Posted on 22nd September 2003

It has come to our notice that a few people have been getting mail errors. This is due to the fact that a weasel stole our POP server. This will be shortly fixed, by virtue of Si1entDave and DrWatson comandeering a Land Rover Defender, and going off-road to steal it back again. As is right and proper, we will be following the lessons learnt from the A-Team, and customising the vehicle. This will include the addition of both CB and UHF radios, increasing of the ground clearance, and adding a large M16 minigu...

Holidays

Posted on 30th June 2003

Molotov appears to be suitably stable once again, after swapping a faulty component. Needless to say, the CompSoc Technical Team will keep an eye on things to make sure everything continues to work.

In other news, the Mega-LAN was had! And lo, there was much Goodness. Photos are here: LAN piccies. Enjoy!

Finally, have a good summer, everyone - see you next year!

Molotov stability

Posted on 20th June 2003

As many of you will have noticed, Molotov has crashed for the second time in quick succession. Luckily, the Technical Team were able to get in to the server room and restart things within a few hours.

We are not certain as to the cause of the failure at this stage. However, we have replaced a suspected faulty component with a known good one. We will continue to monitor the situation, and take any steps necessary to guarantee availablitity of CompSoc services.

It is likely that Molotov will suffer from a s...

Server Upgrades

Posted on 10th June 2003

Molotov has now been upgraded with the components left over from the Insomnia upgrade. Thus our servers are now:
Molotov
AMD Duron 950
512Megs PC133 RAM

Insomnia
AMD XP2200+
1024 Megs PC2300 DDR RAM

There will probably be a Molotov reboot in the next little while, when we upgrade the kernel so we can use lm-sensors to find out how hot its getting. Other than that the latest round of upgrades is pretty much finished. The VPN works, the new IRCd is running smoothly, and the hamsters are running fast enough ...

End of term LAN and BBQ

Posted on 3rd June 2003

Hi guys, with exams and the like going on, CompSoc hasn't done much this term, but fear not; there's more to come after the exams!

We have a barbeque on the Sunday at the end of week 9 (22nd Jun), followed by the longest LAN CompSoc have ever held - 76 hours! This one will be starting as a "pre-LAN" on Monday 23rd June, which will be held in Lib1 (since Lib2 was booked), and followed immediately by the full LAN, held in both rooms, starting on Tuesday 24th.

Signups for the LAN will be activated on Tuesday...

Perl Tutorials

Posted on 11th May 2003

Hi! For those of you who didn't know, Perl tutorials are happening on Wednesdays in the Union Meeting Rooms (see the Socials Page for more details on locations).

The tutorial notes for the first tutorial are now up at http://www.warwickcompsoc.co.uk/~bucko/perl/. Sorry about the lack of sophisticatedness of the page.
