We have the return of Lighting Talks for this year! Where we fit a range of short educational talks into (hopefully) an hour! Our courses are continuing as usual this week, with Week 3 of 6 of the xSoc beginners Python Course on Tuesday, and Week 2 of 4 of our more advanced Rust Course on Thursday. Both great opportunities that you donโ€™t want to miss! Of course, we also have our regular Pub Meal and Friday Night Gaming!

๐Ÿ” Weekly Pub Meal

๐Ÿ•– Mon 17 Oct 7pm - 9pm ๐Ÿ“ Phantom Coach
Let's return to our roots (well, it was only 3 weeks ago), and return to the Phantom Coach. We've really broken our streak of being stuck outside I promise ๐Ÿคž.

๐ŸŒ xSoc Python Course Session 3

๐Ÿ•– Tue 18 Oct 7pm - 9pm ๐Ÿ“ OC0.03 / OC0.01
3rd session again run by Coding Society, and this week we'll be covering lists & loops! We'll also (re-) start Wahoot, with a little more guidance this time!

This course will take you from a complete novice to creating a quiz program, so if you've fancied creating some gadgets, a website, or automating some daily task: this course will bring anyone up to speed! Find materials and catch-up on previous weeks at go.uwcs.uk/python

โšกLightning Talks

๐Ÿ•‘ Wed 19 Oct 2:30pm - 3:30pm ๐Ÿ“ OC0.03
Our first set of Lightning Talks this year! If you don't know what Lightning Talks are, they are a set of three short student talks covering a variety of topics!

In no particular order:

  • Making Servers Gossip - Tomas
  • Data is Data: Why Pokemon Yellow is Busted - Sammy
  • Boxes. Boxes in Boxes - Keegan

So come along and fit some entertaining and perhaps educational content into your day. Maybe, just maybe we might get another talk that hits 40k views

โš™๏ธRust Course 2

๐Ÿ•– Thu 20 Oct 7pm - 9pm ๐Ÿ“ Department of Computer Science
For experienced programmers. Learn one of the most loved languages by developers! This week will dig into some of the more unique parts of Rust: borrowing and starting on traits. We'll get you started on CHIP-8 as well!

With the support of a grant by the Rust Foundation, we'll be guiding you through what makes Rust stand out from the crowd, and get hands-on with some projects. First, Tic-tac-toe. Next, a Chip-8 Interpreter. Finally, a Graphics Raytracer built from the ground up. Not to be missed!

๐ŸŽฎ Friday Night Gaming

๐Ÿ•— Fri 21 Oct 8pm - 11:59pm ๐Ÿ“ Department of Computer Science
Join us Friday for a night of fun! With a ton of games and consoles, plus our VR setup. I don't quite know what happened last week, but it can't have gotten worse. All I know is it lasted until 4am, and this ending time is getting increasingly theoretical.

In other news, I've been busy adding games to GamingGet, our lovely free game system, come along and give a few a go!

I hope you all are preparing for Halloween, because we sure are! Only two weeks to go until I subject you all to Minecraft's best boss (no, not the ender dragon)
